That's true in a sense, but yes, I somehow don't think it's in Clover Moore to rip up Glebe and violate it in such a manner. She did say that the growth corridor was down towards Redfern and Green Square - south of the current CBD - so I suspect Glebe is spared from the high-rises.

Amalgamation (or perhaps, rather, rezoning) certainly wasn't popular when Glebe was getting gobbled up by the City Of City. But it's fairly obvious why that was: It may be no secret that Leichhardt council is pretty damn incompetent, but it's canonically Inner West, with connotations of parks and bays and families and whatnot. Where the City Of Sydney is probably just evocative of Rarrrrgh, Skyscrapers Will Crush Your Poor Bohemian Soul!!
Which makes little sense with Clover Moore as the Lord Mayor... But there may be some legitimacy in a fear that, by Glebe becoming part of a council that contains distinctly CBD-style development, that type development may naturally, eventually, start to infect Glebe.

I would have to agree with both comments, and perhaps the middle ground forward would be to reduce the number of local government areas instead of removing them entirely. However, amalgamation doesn't seem to be very popular... at least in Queensland. Not sure why people would be so attached to them...

I for one would support having a more widely representative overall governing authority for Sydney, at the expense of local government authorities. Local government is often a joke - look at the blatantly racist Marrickville Council, the ridiculously incompetent Leichardt Council, the unscrupulously money-grabbing Burwood Council. Giving powers to a central authority means more transparency, more scrutiny, and better consideration of the big picture.

I would love for there to be an authority that covers the entire Sydney area - maybe things would actually get done. But such an authority would be a genuine threat to the power of the state government, so I doubt it would ever happen.
